The underlying tone of this album is an homage to musical archivist Alan Lomax. My fascination with Lomax’s work began in college while studying his travels from the 1930’s. Lomax traveled the United States in a Ford Model-T, documenting the country’s rich and diverse aural history collecting folk songs, hymns and ballads. Lomax understood the deeply woven traditions of our country’s songs and the hearts of those who preserved these tunes from generation to generation.

The melodies and application of Lomax’s work sparked this project and its’ artistry. My friend and fellow musician,
Kirk Knufke, brought in a few tunes from one of Lomax’s songbooks and instantly, I felt the inspiration deep within my DNA. Growing up in southern Georgia, I was exposed to a lot of music; country, gospel, blue grass, etc., that has connected me with Lomax long before I knew his story and studied his accomplishments. Lomax and I have shared a thread for these emotional melodies; melodies that often showcased love and struggle in a country that was working to create it’s own identity and cultural history thru song and tradition.

Lomax documented over 5,000 hours of American life thru song.

My charge was to create music from selected melodies that inspired a new and modern interpretation of our history with some of New York’s most adventurous musicians.
